Marathon Massage

Are you running a Marathon this year? Don’t forget to include a weekly session of sports massage as it moves closer to the big day…

Sports massage is a form of deep tissue massage, designed to help prevent injuries and improve performance. It is particularly useful for those undertaking intensive training for endurance events. Intensive training causes muscular tension which causes a loss of elasticity and flexibility. Frequent massage will help stretch out muscles and ensure optimal blood flow to the affected area, consequentially enabling nutrients to fully supply the soft tissue.

Effects and benefits of sports massage:

  • Pumps blood and fluid around the body.
  • Helps stretch muscles and improve elasticity.
  • Breaks down scar tissue from previous muscular injuries.
  • Reduces pain.
  • The release of endorphins caused by massage will also aid you in keeping a positive mental mindset as you continue training for your marathon.

Post-Marathon Massage

Don’t forget to get a light leg massage straight after your race. Most charities will offer a 10min massage service to reduce the increase in lactic acid and build up of muscular pain. It is advisable to wait at least 48 hours after your event before having a full sports massage. This will give any residual soreness time to ease and any acute injuries time to settle.

Mike Varney Physiotherapy is currently offering a loyalty card offer for Marathon Runners, If you have 3 massages before the event you get the post-marathon massage absolutely FREE!
